The Samanids are special because they invigorated the Persian world after a century of Arab domination. Their founder, Saman Khuda, was a local man – from Balkh in what is now northern Afghanistan. The dynasty was the first in Central Asia to create a strong, professional army rather than press-ganging local farmers at time of war. They governed competently from there seat at Bukhara, and their 100-year rule was a time of relative peace and commercial expansion. Trade is all sorts of goods flourished, with huge caravans travelling to and fro across the Muslim world and beyond. The slave trade in particular became immensely lucrative, with Turkic captives taken of the steppes and sold as soldiers. The Samanids rulers controlled the business tightly, licensing slave dealers and collecting taxes on all sales.
During this prosperous time, the great houses of learning in Central Asia flourished, enriched by the exchange of ideas, books and scholars of the Arab world.
In 1999, in Dusti Square in the central part of the Ismoili Somoni administrative district of Dushanbe, in honor of the 1100th anniversary of the Samanid state, the first Tajik state, the "Memorial Complex of National Reconciliation and Revival of Tajikistan" and a monument to the first emir of the Tajik state (the Samanid state) – Ismoili Somoni were erected. The square received a new name - "Dusti" square.
The height of the statue of Ismoili Somoni is 13 meters, it is made of bronze. The majestic /monument is decorated with a large stalactite arch, on top of which there is a golden crown. The height of the structure is 43 m above ground level. Also built inside is a museum and a copy of the Samanid mausoleum (9th-10th centuries in Bukhara). On both sides of the monument to Ismoili Somoni are bronze lions - a symbol of the stability of the state, a guarantor of peace and national harmony in the country.
